Kemp wins NL Player of Week

Matt Kemp was named National League player of the week for the week ending May 4th. Kemp went off last week with 11 hits, 11 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Kemp is also riding an eleven game hitting streak, bringing his batting average up to .330. Kemp has been playing primarily in right or center field. Joe Torre has been moving the big right handed hitter up and down the line-up and Kemp has responded with 24 RBIs on the season.

The Mindset of a Fanatic: Delusions of Baseball Grandeur

As a baseball season goes from a slow spring simmer to a hearty summer boil, it is the fan that reflects the bipolarity of a franchise’s success. The fanatic lives and dies for his team, one game, one inning and one pitch at a time. And do things that make sanity only a meager word in the psychiatric dictionary.

Last week, for example, LF Alfonso Soriano had begun the season batting around .050, one hit in 20 at bats. This started conversations again about his suitability to lead off for the Cubs. Fans were clamoring for a change. The Windy City Windbags, a team in downtown Chicago no one has ever heard of, were out in gale force. A cheap bottle of scotch and a linoleum floor were the answers to my baseball addictive behaviors. I was nearing the ledge – looking for a way down off the Sears Tower.

Dodger Dog 2008

Last night I experienced my first rain delay in over 20 years of attending baseball games. I never would have thought that my first rain delay would come at Chavez Ravine, but there I was sitting in the rain while the Dodgers battled the very much hated Giants. Although the rain was a bit of a bummer, I had a great time on the whole. Here are some quick thoughts from my first trip to Dodgers stadium in 2008.

Dodger Dogs – Nothing compares to a Dodger Dog. Best dog in all of professional baseball. I can’t explain why, I just know that it is.
