I’m bored. I hate off days. And if you add an off day to an afternoon game the day before, that means two nights without a game to watch. Sure, there are other teams on the television, but it’s not the same. It’s not our team.
For six months, baseball on the radio or on TV provides the steady background noise of our lives. The announcers are our friends, or at very worst, our annoying won’t-shut-up relatives (Big “hi” to Josh Lewin!) who finally kind of grow on us. You reflexively reach for the radio, trying to remember what time the game starts, or bounce back and forth trying to find which channel is televising the game before you remember: Off day.
The players need a break. We understand that. No one would ask them to play 162 games in a row without a day off. Heck, Seattle could use a couple of weeks off, sleep in late, try and find somewhere to get a nice cup of coffee and put their season back together. The Padres deserve some comp time for all of the 18- and 22-inning games they’ve been playing lately. And to be honest, the “Lost” finale was going to eat up two hours tonight anyway. But come Monday, June 9th, I’m going to miss the Rangers, even if they deserve the day off….
A Few Other Notes:
Sure, everyone expected the Rangers to take series wins from Minnesota, KC, Oakland, Seattle, Houston, and Cleveland, but you didn’t really expect them to go in and win 2 out of 3 at the Trop, did you? That’s the Rays, for crying out loud. Show some respect. (I’m happy for their team, but am I getting sick of all of the bandwagon “Rays Nation” fans you run into on the streets these days….)
Josh Hamilton is on the cover of SI this week. Nice to see our guys getting the love from the national press, even if they used a photo where you can’t see Texas or Rangers on his uniform. Neat trick.
In case you missed it earlier this season, the AP Wire Reports listed each team’s payroll. No surprise that the Yankees, the Mets, and the BoSox are 3 of the 4 at the top. A little bit surprised that Detroit snuck in at number two ahead of the Mets. Florida? No big shock that the Marlins are last, but you might want to sit back and consider this:
Florida 2008 payroll - $21,836,500 A-Rod 2008 salary - $28,000,000
And finally, if you are old enough to be reading this column, (a) you should know better, and (b) you’ve probably seen enough fireworks to last a lifetime. (Boom. Ahhhh. Repeat.) But if you get the chance, go see a fireworks show at the Ballpark. They’ve got one this coming Saturday and then again at the end of June. They really do a great job with it, you’re in comfortable seats instead of sitting on an ant-covered blanket or the hood of your car (or in traffic on I-30), and as an added bonus, it’s not an off day. There’s a baseball game.
